The red-billed starling (Spodiopsar sericeus) is a species of starling in the family Sturnidae. It is found in south and southeastern China.

• Physical Characteristics:

The Red-billed Starling is a medium-sized bird that measures about 23 cm (9 inches) in length and weighs around 80 g (2.8 oz). Vermillion beak and orange-yellow feet. The head and neck of the male bird are satiny white or brownish white, the back is dark gray, the breast is gray, and both of them fade behind, and the wings and tail are black. The front of the head of the female bird is brownish white, the back is dark gray, the upper body is grayish brown, the lower body is light grayish brown, and other birds are the same as the male birds. The characteristics are very obvious, and it is not difficult to identify in the wild.

• Habitat:

Red-billed Starlings mainly inhabit open areas such as secondary forests, small jungles and savannah slopes in low mountains and hills and plains at the foot of mountains below 1000 meters above sea level. It is especially common in broad-leaved forests, mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests, orchards and sparse forests near farming areas.

• Diet:

Red-billed Starlings mainly feed on insects, especially agricultural and forestry pests such as cutworms, beetles, and locusts, as well as fruits and seeds of plants such as mulberry and banyan fruit.

• Behavior:

Red-billed Starlings are social birds and are often seen in flocks. They love to inhabit power lines, jungles, orchards, and farming areas, and nest in burrows. Gather large flocks in winter, few in summer, and form large flocks when migrating. In addition to activities in pairs during the breeding season, they often form small groups of 3-5 individuals, and occasionally large groups of more than 10 individuals are seen. Often forages on the ground, sometimes with other birds on farmland and grasslands. It is more timid in nature, it flies when it sees people, and its song is sweet and loud.

• Distribution:

Red-billed Starlings are mainly distributed in China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea and the Philippines. Among them, it is a traveling bird in Korea and the Philippines.
