Annual Census Finds 42 Waterbird Species in Narayani River Wetlands

Madhyabindu, Nawalparasi – Jan 20: The annual waterbird census conducted in the Narayani River area has recorded 42 species of birds this year, marking a slight increase compared to 41 species recorded last year.

According to DB Chaudhary, Bird Census Coordinator for the West Sector of Chitwan National Park, both bird diversity and population numbers have increased in the Narayani River and nearby wetlands. The survey documented a total of 12,887 birds from 42 species this year.

In comparison, the census counted 9,548 birds from 41 species in 2024 and 10,257 birds from 41 species in 2023. “The number of species has increased by one, and the total bird population has grown by 3,339 compared to last year,” Chaudhary said.

Nepal is home to 903 bird species, including 162 species that depend on aquatic habitats. The census covered five survey sections along the river: Sighrauli to Amaltari, Sighrauli to Pithauli, Pithauli to Amaltari, and Amaltari to the Triveni Gandak Barrage.

Chaudhary noted that the Narayani River area attracts a large number of migratory birds each year. Many of these birds travel from Siberia and other northern regions to escape extreme winter conditions, significantly boosting the seasonal bird population.
