The number of winter aquatic migratory bird species in Chitwan National Park (CNP) and nearby areas has increased this year, according to a recent bird census conducted from January 8 to 10.
The survey recorded a total of 62 species, up from 55 species documented last year. Newly recorded species include the Tilahari (ibisbill) as well as several types of eagles, indicating greater species diversity in the region.
Despite this increase in species variety, the overall population of migratory birds has declined significantly. The total number dropped from 8,086 birds last year to 5,848 this year. Among the most affected species, the population of Ruddy Shelducks fell sharply from 4,107 to 2,470.
Officials attribute the decline in bird numbers to growing human pressure, environmental pollution, and the spread of invasive species in and around the park. These factors are believed to be negatively affecting bird habitats, even as a wider range of species continues to visit the area during winter.
