Audubon Florida Closes Key Beach Areas to Protect Nesting Shorebirds During Breeding Season

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Audubon Florida is preparing for the upcoming beach bird nesting season by taking steps to protect vulnerable coastal species.

According to the organization, spring and summer are crucial months for beach-nesting birds. During this period, the birds must avoid disturbances from people, storms, and predators in order to successfully hatch and raise their chicks.

Many seabirds and shorebirds lay their eggs directly in the sand. Because they are easily frightened by people and dogs, they often fly away when boaters, beachgoers, or pets approach too closely. When this happens, the birds may temporarily leave their eggs or chicks unattended.

To help protect these birds, Audubon Florida said it will close off certain nesting areas that are important for state-threatened species such as Least Terns and Black Skimmers.

Some of the restricted locations include the Second Chance Critical Wildlife Area in Collier County, which will be closed to boaters from March 1 through Aug. 31. Additional nesting areas in Fort Myers Beach and the Little Estero Critical Wildlife Area in Lee County will also be protected.

“Our coastal birds depend on these quiet stretches of beach to safely nest and raise their young,” said Megan Hatten, Audubon’s Southwest Florida Shorebird Program Manager. “Our beaches are shared spaces, and by simply giving nesting birds the room they need and respecting posted areas, our community plays a vital role in protecting the future of Florida’s coastal wildlife.”
