HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — After drawing strong interest with its February program on attracting pollinators, HSV Audubon will host another educational event this week focused on helping residents create bird-friendly yards.
Lynn Foster, president of the Arkansas Audubon Society, will lead the presentation at 10 a.m. Thursday. The event will highlight practical steps homeowners can take to make their yards safer and more welcoming for birds.
Foster is a retired law professor from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock who later became a certified Arkansas Master Naturalist. According to organizers, she has been active in bird conservation and education throughout the state.
Foster says her “spark bird” — the species that first inspired her passion for birding — is the northern flicker. Later this month, she will volunteer for the third time at Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbon, Nebraska, where more than 600,000 sandhill cranes gather annually during their spring migration north.
During Thursday’s program, Foster will share tips on how homeowners can design and maintain bird-friendly spaces. Topics will include what features to encourage in a yard, common hazards to avoid, and ways to repurpose outdoor spaces to provide food, shelter and safe habitat for birds. She will also discuss where to buy native plants — and where to avoid purchasing them — and share interesting facts about common backyard bird species.
The event is hosted by HSV Audubon in partnership with POA Parks and Recreation and will be held in the Coronado Center auditorium. Admission is free and the program is open to the public.
