November 17 (FlyBirdWorld): As winter sets in, Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district—famous for having the highest density of one-horned rhinoceroses in India—has begun welcoming flocks of migratory birds.

After traveling thousands of miles from Europe and America, several species of migratory birds have already arrived at the sanctuary this year. Their arrival, which began in early November, is drawing both Indian and international tourists to the popular wildlife destination.

According to sanctuary authorities, most of these migratory birds come from European countries and the Tibetan region. In 2024 alone, around 69 species of birds reached Pobitora from different parts of the world.

Pranjal Baruah, Range Officer of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, told FlyBirdWorld that last year the sanctuary recorded the presence of about 56 species of migratory birds.

“The tourist season began on October 23 this year, and visitors have already started coming in. Migratory birds have also started arriving since the first week of November. We expect more birds to reach Pobitora in the coming days,” Baruah said.

He added that during last year’s tourist season, approximately 35,000 visitors—both domestic and foreign—came to the sanctuary, generating revenue of ₹62 lakh. “We are expecting even more tourists this year,” he said.

On the issue of security, Baruah noted that forest staff are actively patrolling both inside and outside the sanctuary.

According to the 2022 rhino population census, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is home to 107 one-horned rhinoceroses, including 30 males, 50 females, and 27 calves. Beyond its critical role in rhino conservation, the sanctuary is also emerging as a major winter haven for migratory birds.
